Hayden Grappie: Management Systems Specialist

A Q & A with our New Mentor Hayden Grappie

We are excited to introduce a new quality mentor on support.jomo247.com: Management Systems Specialist, Hayden Grappie.

Hayden has over twenty years experience of implementing, auditing, and managing quality, environmental, and health and safety management systems. Read on to find out more about Hayden and his work in management systems or visit his profile and contact him here.

How did you get involved in management systems?

In one of my jobs before my quality career began, I had a role in safety. They were preparing for ISO certification and needed my help to assist with implementation of policies and processes for the internal audit. They asked me to help carry out the internal audit to verify that we were ready for the external audit which would achieve them certification.

I am naturally a quality kind of person I think, due to my interest in operations, my eye for detail, and the satisfaction I get from ensuring proper systems planning and when the execution of these plans meets compliance requirements.

What are your specialisms?

I work with a range of industries to cover their quality, environmental, and health and safety requirements. The specific ISO standards I cover are ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001.

I have worked in industries such as heavy construction, manufacturing, process plants, and onshore and offshore oil and gas facilities.

What is your favourite thing about management systems?

Ensuring that everything works the way it should and operating ISO standards gives me job satisfaction for a lot of reasons.

Seeing everything coming together to ensure both the product is as good as it can be, and that the customer is happy means that ISO fulfilment has benefited the business in more ways than checking a box.

I enjoy enabling my clients to be able to move from the pre to post quality mindset, and have achieved an understanding of what management systems provide for them.

What does a typical day of work look like for you as a Management Systems Specialist?

Too long at the moment! Right now I am focused on implementation for a few of my current clients, and work on average 14 hours a day.

I go to a lot of effort to provide the information needed, and to ensure my client achieves their goals in as little time as possible.

What interests you about becoming a mentor?

I am looking forward to providing businesses with ISO quality systems knowledge to help them avoid any issues they might have with understanding language or concepts.

Sometimes businesses can still misunderstand key concepts despite having a mature system, and it’s important that they find a consultant who wants to educate them into having a system that works for them and is fully understood by all stakeholders.

What do you think the next big thing will be in quality management systems?

I think you will see more connectivity between organisations, for example there has been a rise in QMS software such as Jomo247 which will encourage sharing documents, remote working, and better efficiency for companies who work across multiple sites. This will make it easier for businesses to manage their systems and achieve their goals.
