What is Employee Training?

Employee training initiatives offer your employees the chance to develop or learn new skills and knowledge that will help improve their job performance.

Employee training initiatives are critical to engendering sustainable growth and success and create many benefits such as:

  • Increases employee retention by offering career development opportunities.
  • Increases workplace engagement as employees feel valued and more motivated.
  • Increases productivity as employees are more skilled and knowledgeable.
  • Improves the overall quality of work as staff become more competent.
  • Shows that your organisation values and invests in your employees helping to attract the top talent.

What is an Employee Training Plan Workflow and Why is it Important?

An employee training plan workflow is comprised of a series of steps that are required by your organisation to effectively train your staff.

Having a clearly defined employee training plan process can streamline training within your organisation and make it more effective ensuring that all staff training is up to date.

Employee training is so important because it is investing in your staff and their potential which in turn brings increased productivity and a better profit margin.

You need an employee training plan to adhere to various standards, such as ISO 9001.

Using an employee training plan workflow will also ensure consistency in the experience and knowledge of your staff, which will contribute to the increased productivity of your organisation.

How to Create your own Employee Training Plan Workflow

To create an employee training plan process, you should first begin by deciding what you want the process to cover, and the outcomes you want to generate from this.

Your first and last steps should be derived directly from this information.

A cyclical process is often useful for employee training plans, with either an amount of time or a lack of knowledge triggering the cycle to begin again.

Now you can begin to outline the steps that need to be accomplished so that your process can move from start to finish.

It is important to identify which steps in your process require conditional logic.

A step requiring conditional logic will branch off into multiple options.

You need to try and minimise conditional logic steps to only be chosen where necessary.

The steps which do not require conditional logic will flow to each other much quicker, and will allow for a quicker process.

The purpose of an employee training plan workflow is to effectively train staff in new skills, knowledge and behaviours which will help increase their productivity within your organisation.

Now you much consider which steps will ensure your employee training plan workflow produces the most effective outcome possible.

Think about where your outcome and wider business goals when making those steps.

For example, one of the goals of your employee training plan is to ensure employee satisfaction within their job role.

Then you might include a review step where any training suggestions are received and acted on directly from the employee.

Next you need to consider who will be involved in your workflow.

Examine which staff members need to be involved, their individual responsibilities, and what details they will need to carry out the task effectively.

Based on these different factors you can then create specific roles for each step of the task and establish accountability.

Remember one step may have many different roles involved.

Alternatively, one role may have responsibility on many different steps.

Your roles could be defined in broadly generic terms or be more specifically tailored to your organisation and the different departments involved.

For example, in our employee training plan template, which you can download below, we chose to only include HR and the employee.

However, your organisation may require more departments to be involved within the employee training process.
