How did you get involved in Quality?
I have been an auditor since 2017. This career for me was born because I wanted to increase productivity in the project I was involved in, and I wanted to improve how I worked. I found that quality processes not only allowed me and the companies I worked for to gain certification which provided confidence for the people we traded with, but that they also provided essential improvement on the ground which could be felt. Since 2010, I worked inspecting highways, bridges and overpasses and gained experience in concrete testing. This background also enables me to understand my clients in construction and manufacturing better, as I once was doing their job.
What are your specialisms?
I carry out audits for certifications including ISO 9001, which was the first ISO standard I trained in. This past year has been one of growth for me, as I’ve utilised the time previously spent travelling learning instead. Last year I completed training in 14001 and 27001, and this year I have added 45001 to my repertoire.
What is your favourite thing about Quality Management?
For me, what gets me out of bed in the morning to go to work is the idea that I am helping the client to understand what they can do better, and become more profitable. In this way, it’s not just about the certification but helping people to achieve better and better things. There is always room for improvement for any business, and improvement means growth and a higher profit margin.
When I help a client to draw up a Quality Management System, I can show them where they can be more profitable, more efficient, and a better quality business.
What does a typical day of work look like for you?
Normally I would be visiting the clients. Currently, I see some of them remotely but some on site due to the Covid-19 crisis. We go through an initial phase of introductions as I familiarise myself with industry and what they are working on. They let me know of any challenges they are facing, and I write processes for them to overcome these obstacles. We go through and build their Quality Management System and then onto audit itself. I follow my clients through the whole process.
What interests you about becoming a quality mentor?
Becoming a quality mentor on Jomo247 will give me the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with new people, both potential clients and other mentors alike. Finding new people to help take their business to the next level is an exciting prospect.
I am also excited to learn a few new things from the other peers, especially as I continue to grow within my own business. Networking with other auditors will be beneficial to my own personal growth.
What do you think the next big thing will be in Quality?
I believe that Covid-19 has moved a lot of the process online, and that we will see a move back to person-to-person contact over the course of this year. Around 40% of the work, such as the introduction and various chunks of paperwork can be done remotely, but I think that 60% of an audit still needs to be carried out with face-to-face interaction which cannot be replaced.
